Filter pleat collapse can reduce the filter surface area by as much as 60%.

Sometimes, it can be hard to detect filter pleat collapse, especially with standard 10” filters. The filter in the image is a high flow pleated filter and was used on a catalyst recovery application. The flow is from inside to outside, capturing the catalyst in the filter.

The initial problem spotted was the flow/time to process a batch. The flow rate shouldn’t have been an issue. Despite having more than enough capacity for the application, the filters still struggled to process the batch in workable time.

On inspection, it was clear that there was an issue with filter pleat collapse. Visually this may have been difficult to diagnose if it hadn’t been for the carbon. The carbon clearly indicates where the flow through the filter is and where the collapse has prevented flow.

The importance of understanding the application and seeing the filters in-situ can’t be underestimated, as the solution to this issue is straightforward.
